The Gospel

The good news of Jesus Christ—His life, death, and resurrection—and how we can be reconciled to God through faith in Him.

Last updated: 1 December 2024

What is the Gospel?

The word "gospel" means "good news." But to understand why the news is good, we must first understand our desperate condition without it.

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes." — Romans 1:16

The Bad News First

Created for God's Glory

God created human beings in His image, to know Him, enjoy Him, and glorify Him forever. We were made for relationship with our Creator.

The Problem of Sin

But our first parents, Adam and Eve, rebelled against God. They chose to go their own way, and their sin brought devastating consequences upon all humanity.

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." — Romans 3:23

Every person since has been born with a sinful nature, inclined toward rebellion against God. We have all violated God's law—not just in actions, but in thoughts, motives, and desires.

The Consequence

The penalty for sin is death—not just physical death, but spiritual separation from God for eternity. We stand guilty before a holy God, unable to save ourselves.

"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." — Romans 6:23

The Good News

This is where the gospel shines! Despite our rebellion, God loved us and made a way of salvation.

God's Love

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). God's love is not sentimental affection, but sacrificial action.

Christ's Work

Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became a man—fully God and fully human in one Person. He lived the perfect life we could never live, fulfilling God's law completely.

Then, on the cross, He bore the punishment we deserved. He became our substitute, taking the wrath of God upon Himself so that we might be forgiven.

"He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed." — 1 Peter 2:24

The Resurrection

On the third day, Jesus rose bodily from the dead, conquering sin, death, and Satan. His resurrection proves that His sacrifice was accepted and that He has power over death.

How to Be Saved

Salvation is a gift from God, received by grace through faith.

Repentance

Repentance means a change of mind that leads to a change of direction. It involves acknowledging our sin, turning away from it, and turning toward God.

Faith

Faith is trusting in Christ alone for salvation—not in our own good works, religious rituals, or moral efforts. It is casting ourselves entirely on Jesus and His finished work.

"Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." — Romans 10:9

Grace Alone

We contribute nothing to our salvation except the sin that made it necessary. Salvation is entirely by God's grace—His undeserved favor given to those who deserve only judgment.

The Results of Salvation

When we trust in Christ, amazing things happen:

  • Forgiveness — All our sins are pardoned
  • Justification — We are declared righteous in God's sight
  • Adoption — We become children of God
  • New Life — We are born again, given a new nature
  • The Holy Spirit — God Himself comes to dwell within us
  • Eternal Security — We are kept by God's power forever

Living the Gospel

The gospel is not just the entrance to the Christian life—it is the power for all of life. We never move beyond our need for the gospel. Daily we must return to Christ, resting in His finished work and drawing strength from His grace.

Sharing the Gospel

Having received such good news, we are called to share it with others. Jesus commanded us to make disciples of all nations, proclaiming the message of reconciliation to a lost world.

"How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!" — Romans 10:15

Conclusion

The gospel is the greatest news in all of history. God, in His infinite love, has made a way for sinners to be reconciled to Him through Jesus Christ. Have you believed this good news? Have you trusted in Christ alone for your salvation?

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." — Ephesians 2:8-9
